Building Kai Resilience: A Day of Sharing and Swapping at the Food Forest
Yesterday, our community came together for more than just a plant swap; we participated in a meaningful act of collective kairesilience. By sharing our plants and knowledge, we are actively strengthening our local food systems and ensuring a more robust and diverse supply of food for our future.
Diversifying Our Food Resources
The tables were a magnificent showcase of our community’s commitment to food sovereignty. We were able to discuss a huge range of plants, from familiar staples to highly valuable resources. Among the many offerings were unique finds like loquats, myoga ginger, luffa, and cassava, which offer different flavors and nutrients for our gardens.
The real gems, however, were the less common species that help diversify our food sources. We saw carob seedlings and strawberry trees grown from seed, as well as crucial perennial plants like rare bele spinach and white sapotes. It was truly inspiring to see what people are growing and to hear their stories, reinforcing the idea that we can grow so much of our own food right here.
Tasting the Fruits of Our Labour
A key part of building a resilient food system is celebrating what can be grown locally. We were fortunate to enjoy a delicious tasting session with tropical fruits generously supplied by Vector Group Charitable Trust, who grow them right here in Te Puke. The tropical pawpaw and babaco were a huge hit, proving that even a taste of the tropics can be homegrown. The pawpaw, in particular, was the “tastiest ever” and a true testament to the time and care put into growing it.
The Heart of the Community
These events are vital because they are built on community connection and mutual support. It was a joy to see everyone sharing not just plants, but stories and enthusiasm. It’s a true “fair share swap” that builds friendships as well as gardens.
Our deep thanks go to Selena, whose vision and dedication make these events possible. Her commitment to bringing us together is a crucial part of our journey toward resilience. Ngā mihi nui kia koe, Selena, for all that you do. We’d also like to give a special shoutout to Coralie for celebrating her birthday with us!
Keep an eye out for the next event, which will be announced today for three weekends from now. Let’s continue this work together and keep building a stronger, more resilient food community.
