Situated in Whanganui, Anglican Church St Pauls is celebrated not only for its striking spire but for its deep cultural significance and stunning interior craftsmanship. Visitors are drawn to the exquisite Tukutuku panels and intricate carvings, masterpieces overseen by the renowned Sir Apirana Ngata. The church serves as a place of worship and a historical treasure, where the stories of the past are as captivating as the community that gathers there. It’s an inviting destination for those interested in Maori artistry, spiritual reflection, and a welcoming atmosphere among warm and friendly people. St Pauls offers a memorable experience that beautifully blends history, art, and faith in the heart of Whanganui.

5 years agoAs I usually do, I saw St. Paul’s spire first. We drove over to stop by and take some photos. I took them and moved on. Little did I know the significance of this place and it’s special history! The real beauty of this place (which I am yet to see in person) is on the inside. Tukutuku panels, carved surfaces amazing Maori craftspersonship, all work overseen by Sir Apirana Ngata (the man on our $50 bank notes) I suspect the greatest beauty of the place though is in its stories.
