a year agoVisited the Marae over the weekend for a walk through the history of Maori since colonization. We were welcomed onto the Marae with a Powhiri and Vicky, the wife of a friend did the Karanga to welcome us on. Our work group learned so much about Tikamga Maori, the protocols and rules on a Marae and many of our group did a stay over and slept in the Wharanui, the main meeting house. We were provided amazing Kai (food) and all around had an amazing time. The Marae is special in that it is not for any one Tribe or Iwi and is open to all. They gad flags from many nations, cultures and religions on display. They taught us that anyone on need or who us alone or feeling lonely can make contact with the Marae via their Facebook page and be welcomed on. They have a shared community meal on Monday's and other classes and events going on, on a regular basis. The Tangata Whenua, the people of the land are so welco ubg and lovely and open and proud t To share their culture and their space with others. Really wonderful experience all around. Everyone should spend time on a Marae in their life time. It us a warming, spiritual experience that feeds the soul.
