The Orthodox Christian Church Christ the Saviour, formerly known as Holy Cross Anglican church, is a jewel in Portland known for its warm community and historic charm. This beautiful 1904-built church features wooden pews, polished floors, and a classic organ, all complemented by stunning views over the bay. The congregation prides itself on inclusivity, with services conducted in English by native speakers, making it accessible to converts and locals alike. Attendees appreciate the genuine fellowship that follows each liturgy, often sharing coffee and snacks that foster a familial atmosphere. The church’s origins as a place of worship for local cement works workers add to its unique story, and its revival as an Orthodox parish breathes new life into this cherished building. For those seeking a spiritual home with heartfelt community connections in Portland, this church is a true beacon of light.

2 years agoAmazing Church. Amazing People. It's presence is a real blessing. The building is from 1920 and was originally an Anglican church built for the workers of the Cement Works nearby. The church was converted afew years ago, after being abandoned. Communion is every 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month at 9:30 am. Sermons and prayer are done mostly in English.

3 years agoBeautiful 1904 church, with wooden pews and floors, and even an organ! The views are just wonderful over the bay. Amazing small Orthodox parish that feels like a family. Fr Michael and presbytera Karen are native English speakers, so all services are conducted in English, which makes it an unique New Zealand Orthodox church for converts, and for those who prefer a non-exclusive community.

3 years agoWonderful small Orthodox community. I love the fact that the Liturgy is completely in English, and fr Michael is a local kiwi man! Always a good coffee and snacks after the Liturgy, feels like an extended family. I invite everyone to come and see the Light of Orthodoxy!
