St Columba’s Anglican Church is a charming and historic church nestled in the serene outskirts of Linton, Palmerston North. Known as the “church on the hill,” it showcases classic New Zealand wooden pioneer architecture designed by the renowned Frederick de Jersey Clere. Despite facing adversity from an early 1900s arson, this resilient landmark stands as a proud monument to the dedication and faith of early settlers. Visitors often appreciate its peaceful setting and timeless beauty, with one guest discovering it serendipitously while searching for dark skies to enjoy astronomy. The church’s quaint and quiet location makes it a special place for reflection and photography, inviting you to experience a truly unique spiritual site in the region.

5 years agoThe church on the hill. St Colomba’s is a tiny historic church in a “blink and you’d miss it” locale. It’s loveliness is in its classic NZ wooden pioneer style. Architecturally designed by the celebrated architect Frederick de Jersey Clere, it’s another stunning example of what pioneer Kiwis could do with the little they had available to them. Arson in the early 1900’s almost put an end to the building but it still stands today. It’s a monument to the glory of God and to the hard working early settlers of the area.

6 years agoI pulled off the main road to try and find some dark sky for astronomy, and stumbled on this beauty. Gorgeous old church, in the middle of nowhere, I'll definitely be coming back for more photos when it's a bit darker!
