Waitaki District Council is centrally located in the historic heart of Oamaru at 20 Thames Street, housed in the iconic white stone building that was once the old Oamaru Post Office. Visitors and locals alike appreciate the council’s thoughtful approach to community needs, particularly noting the incredibly affordable parking rates that make exploring this charming town convenient and budget-friendly. The council is also deeply involved in preserving and enhancing the unique character of Oamaru, especially in areas like the Harbour Street precinct, which is undergoing impressive restoration efforts that draw tourists like a magnet. While some community members hope for further enhancements such as pedestrian-friendly zones to protect the town’s historic authenticity, the council remains a cornerstone institution supporting the vibrant cultural and social life of Oamaru.

11 months agoJust had a third letter (warning) from the council for unpaid dog rego which was paid in July. They have previously sent the rego tag and apologised after the last letter when i called them and advised it had been paid. These council staff obviously appear incompetent and don't keep proper records. How hard can it be.

6 years agoWe thoroughly enjoyed 5 nights in the motor home park in Freindly Bay. We are in awe of the restoration that is going on in the Harbour Street precinct. it is very evident that this part of your beautiful town is drawing in the tourists like some form of magnet.... so why oh why do you let modern motor vehicles park in Harbour Street. To authenticate the past history of Oamaru the quicker someone in Council sees the sense in making the whole of Harbour Street a no parking zone, the better. Come on Oamaru and do the right thing.

2 years agoReally enjoyed our time in Oamaru. Was absolutely amazed that parking is only 90 cents an hour and $4 for full day!!! It's $4+ an hour here in Dunedin and $7+ full day.

6 years agoI was appalled to call the council for some simple answers on re covering a patio roof to find out that they were all on morning break at the same time.. And someone would get back to me when they could. Bloody hell this is the council of all places, some one should be there manning the phones in each department while this building has open hours. You would also think that the review area would have comments about the performance of your dealings with the council not how nice the town looks in photo's..
